Today

Today my calendar beeped at me, reminding me that it's the first day of fall. I rolled over into my nest of pillows and smiled. Today officially my obsession with Pumpkin can begin. Every year I wonder if I will burn myself out of Pumpkin in my kitchen and I never do. Never. Pumpkin bread, Pumpkin cookies, Pumpkin pancakes, Pumpkin cinnamon rolls, Pumpkin syrup, Pumpkin soup, Pumpkin seeds, Pumpkin ravioli, Pumpkin bagels, Pumpkin cream cheese, oh and of course Pumpkin pie. I buy canned pumpkin by the cases and actual pumpkins by the truck full. And I treat it as if it is a proper noun.

As I laid there this morning wishing I had a Pumpkin bagel toasted with cinnamon cream cheese, I thought about this fall season. Is it any different than the falls before? There are football games being cheered on, scarves are being wrapped around my neck, the children are adjusting to wearing long pants and schedules are being followed. Sure this year is different than last year and the years before and it will be different than next year and after that. My belly is swollen with a wiggly baby who will make his debut before the snow falls and hopefully before all the leaves are raked away. Regardless of how different this year is from all the other years, the fall season is still what makes my soul feel whole. From the crisp weather, to the smells and the mountainsides erupting with color, they make me feel better. Snuggling in at night with a cup of hot chocolate reading stories to my babies is so much better than fighting bed time in the middle of summer. Maybe its the smells that pour out of my kitchen that awake a part of me, the part that was sleeping in the heat of the summer. Maybe its the chill when you walk out in the morning that prompts your wool socks and hat. I dunno what it is, but I'm so grateful it's here.
Cheers to the season!

  4. Hi! I am a new follower from SITS. I am from South Africa and we don't do the pumpkin thing like you do - but after reading this post, I will definitely be trying some new recipes! I make a mean butternut pie - so will have to try the pumpkin version!
